Many rivers are now finally beginning to see numbers of fish arriving after a slow start to the season. The Helmsdale had its best week by far and fish are now well over the Kildonan falls.

It's the time of year when temperatures can fluctuate dramatically so be prepared to carry a very mixed bag of flies in your box. Tungsten tubes are catching salmon cutting through heavy water at the heads of pools as are size 10 doubles in the glides at the tail of the same pools so be prepared to adapt tactically to water conditions when you fish to max out your chances.

On the Northern rivers especially, the Alistair tube works superbly well. The fishing was unsettled last week with the arrival of heavy rain but there were some very big fish caught including a 33 pounder from beat 3 and a 26 pounder off beat 6. The week ahead looks very promising for fishing as the weather is due to settle a little towards the end of the week and there seems to be a decent run of fish in the system now.

The fishing is struggling everywhere a little right now especially on the Helmsdale with just one fish off Lower Caen beat 1 and a fish over the falls on beat 3 above last week. Low water is not helping but the rain has arrived so hopefully we will all get a boost in water levels in the coming week. Some big fish are being reported off the Spey and Findhorn and certain beats are having decent catches up river but lowewr beats are not seeing much at all generally anywhere, the fish are flying through most rivers.

The weather is not helping fishing right now so scoring is not great anywhere. The Helmsdale managed around 5 with the highlight coming from Jean Bain who grassed a thumping 20 pounder on beat 6 in the Dyke pool.

However, the high pressure and sunshine cannot stick around for too much longer and rain will hopefully grace the skies for anglers, we need fresh water. The Helmsdale got off to a very promising start last week especially for Andrew Thomas when he landed 2 lovely fish on beat 6, one of them a thumping 19 pounder from the Fall pool. He also had a 10lbs fish and there was a fish off beat 1 same day but that’s where the action ended for the whole week. The river was on the low side and very fishy but for some reason no more fish turned up and 3 was the total for the week. The Helmsdale finally got off the mark last week and yes, it was that man again, Andy (Torrish) Sutherland who grassed the first fish off the river from Beat 4 Dalhallamy pool. The legendary Willie Gunn fly produced the goods and the fish was a classic 10 pounds of pure silver adeptly netted by his daughter Yvonne. 2 other springers were caught on the day by Stuart Foxall beat 6 and Jim Forsyth grassing the first off the Association water. Andy did it again on beat six Saturday with another 10lbs bar of silver from Big Rock pool.

Springers are being caught on most rivers now and another fine example was a cracking 25 pounder for from Roan pool on the Findhorn on our 1” Dee Monkey conehead.
